Logistic label applicator – how labelling pallets?

Marking pallets and other collective packaging with logistic labels (printed on a desktop thermal transfer printer or laser printer) and then manually applying them can be easily automated, eliminating operator involvement in the process. These activities can be facilitated with the use of a logistic label applicator.

It is often expected that the logistic label will be placed on the side of the pallet directly facing the operator of the truck collecting the pallet so that he can inspect the presence of the label or read the codes from the label with the use of a data terminal.

The number of application devices depends on the number of pallet sides and the way and system of their transportation. Transporters with an implemented system for rotating the pallet (turnover device) or controlled solutions (wrappers) for applying stretch wrap that protects products allow the pallet to be marked on each side with the use of one applicator.

In case of lack of a rotation system, if labels are applied on two opposite or adjacent sides, it may be necessary to use two applicators.

Application of a logistic label on the adjacent sides

The offered Label-Aire 3138 N-DAT (Dual Action Tamp) device allows you to print and apply two labels on the adjacent sides (front-side or side-back) of the pallet. As result, we reduce investment costs and minimise service and maintenance. We eliminate the need to rebuild the conveyor that transports the pallets to the collection point.

The sequential operation of the actuators extending the application arm does not force the product to stop during the application of the logistic label. Thus, the pallet can move during the entire labelling cycle.

The Label-Aire 3138 N-DAT applicator allows you to mount any 4″ or 6″ print module (e.g., Zebra ZE500, SATO, Cab, Avery), allowing you to print labels in one of the GS-1 standards for logistic labels (105×148 mm or 148×210 mm). It is also possible to print and apply RFID labels.

The machine is offered in two versions:

  • 3138 N-DAT (Dual Action Tamp) – application of two labels side/front or side/back
  • 3138 N-Swing Arm – application of one label on the front or on the back of the product

Both versions use a modified, non-contact Tamp-Blow application technology (the actuator with an adjustable stroke – first, it extends itself to an appropriate distance from the product, and then, without contact, using a blow of compressed air, applies the label to it). The LA3138-DAT is designed for dual labelling, i.e., where two adjacent product surfaces are labelled in one cycle.

Sequential application of logistic labels

One of the labels can be applied by simply pulling the actuator out. The other one can be applied with the use of a 900 swinging arm (labelling of pallets and larger cartons – two labels in one cycle). The LA3138 N-Swing Arm uses only a swinging arm for label application.

Such a solution is suitable for front or back labelling. Label sizes and speed depend on the parameters of the applied print module. Above all, the device comes as a standard with many advanced solutions. This includes, among other things, a stepper motor sensor which guarantees reliable operation of the machine and is characterised by long service life.

Many possibilities to reduce downtime

It is worth emphasising that the machines are also equipped with an advanced, multifunctional, and user-friendly operator panel. It allows you to set the parameters of the applicator quickly and efficiently. The clear, two-line display provides you with complete information about errors and the status of the device. Moreover, the applicator has an auto-configuration function which allows you to save several dozen different settings. This shortens the time of stoppages needed to reconfigure the machine, and consequently reduces production costs. The LA3138 N-Swing Arm and DAT can be optionally equipped with a speed compensation system that improves the accuracy of label application. It is also possible to optionally add a light signal that informs the operator about a device error or a low consumable status. Above all, the use of the 3138 N-Swing Arm and DAT can optimise the marking and identification process for pallets and collective packaging. It is worth emphasising that it translates to the reduction of costs and improved efficiency of the whole production process.
